CMYK to RGB: what to know
CMYK to RGB converts cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink percentages into red, green and blue values and a hex code for screens. Each RGB channel is 255 multiplied by the share of light its ink lets through and by the share black lets through: R = 255 × (1 − C) × (1 − K), and the same for green with magenta and blue with yellow.
This is useful when a brand guide or print file only lists CMYK and you need the color on a website, in slides or in a social graphic. The result is a close screen version of the printed color under the standard formula, not a match to a specific press.
If the brand also publishes an official hex or RGB value, use that on screen: designers often tune screen and print colors separately so they look alike, and a direct conversion won't reproduce that tuning.
Popular uses
- Bringing print brand colors to a website
- Recreating a printed design in digital tools
- Checking what a CMYK value looks like on screen
- Converting colors from old print files
Tips for the best result
- Enter each ink as a percentage from 0 to 100, as most brand guides list them.
- Total ink above about 300% is usually reduced by printers; very dark CMYK mixes may look different in print.
- Compare with the brand's official hex code if one exists.
