Monochromatic Palette Generator: what to know
The monochromatic palette generator builds a palette from a single hue in different lightness and saturation levels: pale tints, the base color and deep shades. Monochromatic designs are cohesive and calm, and because only one hue is involved there's little risk of colors clashing.
The challenge is hierarchy: without hue contrast, lightness has to do the work. Use the darkest step for text, the lightest for backgrounds, and the middle steps for borders, cards and hover states. Check text pairs with the contrast checker, since neighboring steps rarely have enough contrast for reading.
A monochromatic base with one accent color from elsewhere on the wheel is a classic product UI setup: calm everywhere, with the accent drawing the eye to actions.
Popular uses
- Minimal websites and portfolios
- Dashboards and product UI backgrounds
- Charts that show ordered data, from low to high
- Single-color brand systems
Tips for the best result
- Space steps more widely in lightness than you'd expect; close steps blur together.
- Add a neutral gray family for text if the hue is strong.
- One contrasting accent color keeps a monochromatic UI from feeling flat.
