Color Shades Generator: what to know

The color shades generator gives you three families from one color: tints (mixed toward white), shades (mixed toward black) and tones (mixed toward gray). Choose how many steps you want and copy any of them as a hex code.

Tints are ideal for backgrounds and highlights, shades for text, borders and pressed states, and tones for muted, sophisticated variations that don't compete with the main color. Together they turn one brand color into a working set for a whole interface.

The steps follow the classic definition: each one mixes a little more white, black or middle gray (#808080) into the color in sRGB, the way design tools and paint-style mixing describe tints and shades. For a perceptually even design-system scale, use the Tailwind color generator, which works in OKLCH.

Popular uses

  • Making hover, active and disabled states for buttons
  • Background tints for cards, alerts and badges
  • Muted tones for illustrations and charts
  • Expanding a single brand color into a palette

Tips for the best result

  • Use a tint for a background and a shade of the same color for text on it for a cohesive look.
  • Check text contrast; a light tint with the base color on top often fails for small text.
  • For a full design-system scale, use the Tailwind color generator's 50-950 steps.
