About CSS named colors
CSS defines 148 color keywords, from the 16 basic HTML colors such as red, navy and teal to names inherited from the X11 window system such as papayawhip and lightgoldenrodyellow. A few are spelling variants of the same color: gray and grey (and their dark, light, dim and slate versions) are identical, as are aqua and cyan, and fuchsia and magenta. That's why this library lists 139 distinct colors, with the other spellings shown as aliases on each page.
Keywords are handy for prototypes and readable stylesheets, but they're a fixed, somewhat random set: the names don't follow a system, and “dark gray” is actually lighter than “gray”. For a real design system, pick colors with the palette generator and name them by role. To find the closest keyword for any code, use the color name finder.
