Color Converter: what to know

The color converter translates any color between ten formats: hex, RGB, HSL, HSV, HWB, CMYK, OKLCH, OKLab, CIE Lab and LCH. Paste a value in any of them, or a CSS color name, and every other format updates at once, each with a copy button.

Screen formats describe the same colors in different ways. Hex and RGB give red, green and blue amounts; HSL, HSV and HWB rearrange them into hue and lightness-style values that are easier to edit; Lab, LCH, OKLab and OKLCH are built around human perception, so equal number changes look like equal visual changes.

CMYK is the odd one out: it describes ink on paper. The converter uses the standard device-independent formula, which is fine for a starting point, but a printer's ICC profile for a specific press and paper will give different numbers for critical brand work.

Popular uses

  • Moving colors between Figma, CSS, Photoshop and print files
  • Getting a CSS-ready value in the format your code base uses
  • Translating brand guides that list only one format
  • Learning how color formats relate to each other

Tips for the best result

  • Keep one source of truth (usually hex or OKLCH) and convert from it, rather than converting conversions.
  • Rounding can change a value by one step when converting back and forth; that difference isn't visible.
  • Colors outside the sRGB range (from OKLCH or Lab) are brought into range before hex and RGB are shown.
