Hex to CMYK: what to know
Hex to CMYK converts a hex color code from a website or logo into cyan, magenta, yellow and black percentages for print. The hex code is read as red, green and blue, then converted with the standard formula: black from the brightest channel, and the three colored inks from what's left.
Hex colors live in the sRGB color space of screens, which includes some bright colors that ink can't reproduce. Converting gives you the closest CMYK numbers under the formula, but vivid colors may still print duller than they look on screen.
For logos and packaging, ask your printer for their ICC profile and convert in your layout software, or ask them to match a printed swatch. For business cards and posters from an online printer, the values here are usually a sensible starting point.
Popular uses
- Preparing a website's brand colors for printed materials
- Filling in CMYK fields in print-on-demand tools
- Writing a brand guide with both screen and print values
- Estimating how a hex color will look printed
Tips for the best result
- Order a proof for large print runs; it's the only reliable check.
- Bright RGB greens and blues are the colors most likely to shift in print.
- Keep the hex code as the master color and regenerate CMYK when it changes.
